Saturday, March 22--1st anniversary in "new" building with Kate's Kart

On Saturday, March 22, the Roanoke Public Library will be commemorating their one year anniversary in the new location by celebrating and supporting the efforts of Kate’s Kart whose book carts touch the lives of countless families as they experience the illness and hospitalization of a child.  Come in from 9:00 am- 1:00 pm, or before, and donate an item as described below.  At 1:30 pm, hear Krista Layman, founder of Kate’s Kart as she talks about the organization in the Library’s program room.  Cookies and Punch will be served throughout the day.
"Kate's Kart is a not-for-profit organization that supplies brand new, free books to hospitalized children to keep for their enjoyment. Our goal is to promote literacy and encourage children, and their families, to read on an ongoing basis.
Kate's Kart was founded in 2008 by the Layman family in memory of their daughter, Katherine Anne Layman (affectionately known to family and friends as "Baby Kate").  Since then, our organization has grown to service 16 area hospitals and will soon pass out their 75,000th book.    We currently have over 100 volunteers collecting, counting, sorting, labeling, stocking and distributing books."
Donated books must be NEW due to health regulations. The books that are chosen the fastest off the karts include current, popular titles.   The types of books that are most needed by Kate’s Kart include:
Soft Cloth Books—these books are made out of material and are very popular with teething babies
Board Books—the most popular of this type include touch and feel as well as lift the flap books.  These books have stiff thick cardboard pages.
Picture/Character Books--This is the most popular type of book.   Our greatest needs in this category include those with famous characters, especially movie characters:   Frozen, Lego Movie, Curious George, Disney movies, Dr. Suess, etc.
Story Books--This category includes books that parents might read to their children, specifically the younger kids and babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.   Many times, parents can't hold their child, so it is soothing for a child to hear a parent read one of these classics that you remember reading as a child.
Young Adult/Chapter Books--Our only current need in this category is best sellers, esp. Diary of Wimpy Kid, Hunger Games, Divergent and others on the top of the best seller list.
Activity--These books can often keep the kids entertained with things to do. Coloring and sticker books are in high demand right now.
Bibles—Many families find comfort in a toddler, children’s, or teen bible.
Crayons--New-in-box, unopened, Crayola Crayons:
Cash/Check donations along with gift cards are graciously accepted as well.   These types of donation allow Kate’s Kart to buy the books they are in most need of as well as allow Kate’s Kart to purchase books at a greater discount than the public shopper. Please visit their website for more information as well as their top ten list of needed books:  Kateskart.org

Please bring your donation(s) to the Roanoke Public Library from now to  March 22, from 9 am to 1 pm to help us celebrate the anniversary and help this worthy cause at the same time.
