Disability Day

Amy Rakoczy and her client, Elizabeth of Pathfinders Services of Huntington came to visit the Roanoke Public Library Story Time on Tuesday March 6, 2012 to celebrate Disability Day. Amy talked to the children about differences and that people who may seem different from us are actually quite similar. Elizabeth gave each of the children a bookmark. After the talk, Karen Baker, Library Assistant read the children some books on disability and then the children did a craft of stringing beads on pipe cleaners creating a bracelet. Six special beads of different colors were added to represent the differences in people, but that we are all basically the same.

The exact wording on the petition is "We, Roanoke resident taxpayers who have signed our names, below affrirm that a need exists for new library building for the Roanoke Public Library and that at the Roanoke Public Library cannot provide the... necessary funds on its own to pay the cost required to meet that present need for a library builiding. To achieve this goal, we agree, the Roanoke Public Library should pursue a lease with the owners of the property at 314 North Main Street."

Petition to move the Roanoke Public Library

Roanoke Residents,
Please come in and sign the petition to enable us to move the Roanoke Public Library into the "old coil factory". This move will allow the library to go from about 1300 square feet to almost 3000 square feet. We require at least 50 signatures from residents of the town of Roanoke. You must live within the town limits to sign the petition. Thanks for your help with this project!

Library lost a real asset.

The Roanoke Public Library, as did the Roanoke Community, lost a real asset with the passing of Margaret Quickery. She was on the Library's Board of Trustees,serving as president, until her illness forced her to resign. She will be greatly missed. The Library Board and Staff send out our sincere condolences to her family.

Special Meeting March 8th

The Board of Trustees of the Roanoke Public Library is having a Special Meeting March 8th at the Library starting at 6:30 pm. The purpose of the meeting is to interview perceptive architectual firms to renovate our portion of the "old coil factory" for the "new library".

If you have a green Roanoke Public Library card, all you need is to know your password/pin for that card and you can check out eBooks or downloadable audio books. The Roanoke Public Library is part of the eIndiana Digital Consortium. The Consortium consists of over 30 libraries in Indiana that all purchase and share their eBooks and downloadable audio books. Because of this joint effort of numerous libraries around the state of Indiana, many different ebooks in many different genres are available for checkout. Each user can check out up to 3 titles at a time for a period of 7 or 14 days. You can even put a hold on an eBook that is not currently available. Residents of the Town of Roanoke can receive their “free” library card anytime the library is open by bringing in their driver’s license or a utility bill with their current address. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with a driver’s license or utility bill with their current address. Non-residents of the Town of Roanoke may purchase a card for $48 a year. Remember you must live within the Town of Roanoke’s limits and not just have a Roanoke address to receive the “free” card per state law. Karen made a schedule for January Preschool Programs. January 24th will be featuring polar bears and January 31 will celebrate Groundhog's Day. All children, not in school, are welcome to come to the Roanoke Public at 10:00 am. They will hear books, sing songs, do a craft and have lot's of fun!!

Preschoolers visit the fire station

Last Tuesday, the preschooler at our reading program got a real treat when Brandon Taylor visited and took them on a trip to the fire station. The children were able to into the fire truck, honk the horn and get into an ambulance. They heard all about firemen, fire safety, and people who protect them. The kids had a great time and learned some valuable lessons. Thanks, Brandon, you did a great job!!!

I wanted to take this chance to wish everyone, "HAPPY HOLIDAYS!" I will be on vacation next week but the Library will be open regular hours Tuesday-Thursday. We will reopen on Saturday, the 30th and then be closed on Monday, the 2nd and then open from then on with regular hours barring emergencies.

Good news--the board decided last night to go ahead with plans to move the library into the old Coil Factory (Hunckler's or Nelson Building). Look for more information on that as we follow the necessary steps to move a Public Library.

Again Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for the Board and Staff at the Roanoke Public Library!!!!

Special Meeting on Monday

The Board of Trustees of the Roanoke Public Library will hold a special meeting on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Roanoke Public Library to discuss possibly moving the library to a new location. The public is invited to hear about what may be a exciting time for the library in the near future!

eReader/eBook Program at the Andrews Library

Celia took her collection of eReaders to the Andrews-Dallas Township Library and held a "petting zoo" for the patrons and visitors there on December 7th.. A reference librarian from Huntington Library came and did a program on downloading eBooks on to the different devices using the Overdrive system which Andrews and Roanoke just implemented on November 30th. This event was enjoyed by all. Celia is planning on holding a similar program on downloading eBooks to different devises in the new year so be watching for that date if you get a new devise for Christmas or are having troubles with a device you may already have to use.

Santa came to visit Roanoke riding on the town's fire truck. Children were able to visit with him have cookies and hot chocolate provided by the Lions. They were also invited into the Library for games and hearing a book being read.

The Roanoke Public Library started today offering eBooks. They are available for download for 7 or 14 days. You must have a Roanoke Public Library green Evergreen Libray Card and have your pin set up to be able to freely download up to 3 eBooks. The Roanoke Public Library will be closing at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, Nov 23 and will remain closed on Thursday, Nov. 24. We will reopen with regular hours on Saturday, Nov. 26. Happy and Safe Thanksgiving, everyone!!!!

Friends change meeting dates

The Friends of the Roanoke Public Library have changed when they will hold their meetings. Meeting will now be on the 2nd Wednesday of February, May, August and November with a Special Annual Membership Meeting in March. All meetings are held in the library at 6:30 pm. The Friends invite everyone to join and attend their meetings!

I have been trying to connect my library blog to emails, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. If you received some of the recent emails you will notice that this hasn't been totally successful. I believe I have the bugs worked out and you will be receiving news on the Roanoke Public Library. I will be including programming, events, new or changing policies and anything else that I think would be of widespread interest about the Library. The public is invited to come see, touch and experience a variety of eReaders. Adult Computer Classes

The Adult Computer Classes are continuing on Wednesdays. At September 28th class, we covered the Internet. The students enjoyed looking up the weather here is Roanoke, finding online sales and even looking up their own telephone number. It is amazing what all the Internet has for us to learn about! The October 5th class, we will be discussing Microsoft Word.
